Chon Ji
Number of Movements: 19 (Nineteen)
Ready Stance: Parallel Ready Stance (Narani Chunbi Sogi)
Pattern Meaning: Chon Ji means literally “the Heaven the Earth”. It is, in the Orient, interpreted as the creation of the world or the beginning of human history, therefore, it is the initial pattern played by the beginner. This pattern consists of two similar parts; one to represent the Heaven and the other the Earth. The cross shaped diagram represents the four elements of the universe: fire, water, air and earth.
Note: It is said that the pattern was named after Lake Chon-Ji, or the “heavenly” lake, the name given to a large crater lake on Paektu mountain, an extinct volcano, located on the border of China and North Korea, It is said to have been the first home of Dan-Gun, the legendary founder of Korea. Because of its clear, calm reflection of the sky you can literally see the Heaven meeting the Earth.
